Swiss philanthropy in numbers
Philanthropy includes every voluntary private action for a charitable purpose. On this page we would like to present you some interesting facts about philanthropy in Switzerland.

Donations
- The estimated value of private monetary donations was 1.16 billion CHF in 2007 (ZEWO Stiftung, 2008)
- Three quarters of the Swiss population over 15 years of age donate at least once a year money or goods (Stadelmann-Steffen, 2010).
- Around 72% donate less than 300 CHF. 13% donate more than 1,000 CHF per year. (Stadelmann-Steffen, 2010).
Time Donations
- People who are actively involved in voluntary work are spending 13.7 hours per month for formal and 15.5 hours for informal (e.g. neighbourhood help) voluntary work. One in five people performed an unpaid activity. Therefore people living in Switzerland volunteer around 5 hours per month on average (Bundesamt für Statistik, 2010).
- The total amount of formal and informal voluntary action is estimated at 640 million hours. This equals 80 million working days. (Bundesamt für Statistik, 2010).
Foundations
- In Switzerland exist around 12,700 charitable foundations. The total amount of their endowments equals around 70 billion CHF.
- The annual payout of these foundations is estimated to be 1 - 1.5 billion CHF
- Over 80% of the charitable foundations administer an endowment of less than 5 million CHF (von Schnurbein, 2009).
Associations
- In Switzerland around 80,000 associations exist.
- In 2004, around 2.7 million members were active in 22,578 sports associations. In 1995, 3.4 million members were counted in 27.090 sports associations (Lamprecht, 2005).
Profit-Organisations
- In 2010, companies donated 50 million CHF to the 418 organizations holding the ZEWO-Gütesiegel (ZEWO Statistics, 2010).
- The total amount of donations from companies is estimated to be 1 billion CHF in 2009 (von Schnurbein/Bethmann 2010; Ammann et al. 2004)
