Switzerland ranks fourth on «Global Philanthropy Environment Index»
Philanthropic commitment strongly depends on the political and social framework conditions as shown by the «Global Philanthropy Environment Index», published by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University on April 30, 2018.
The index shows on a scale of 1 to 5 how easy it is to become philanthropically involved in a country. Factors such as the regulation of philanthropic organizations, laws concerning national and international donations, as well as the political and socio-cultural environment are included in the index.
As a country expert, the CEPS was also involved in the data collection for the index. Switzerland ranks fourth behind the Netherlands, Finland and the USA among 79 countries assessed. "While Switzerland performs very well in four out of five factors, compared with the other leading countries, it is particularly evident that local politics shows little interest in philanthropic activities and there is too little exchange between state authorities and philanthropic organizations," CEPS Director Prof. Dr. Georg von Schnurbein explains the result.
In general, the report concludes that political uncertainty is currently the greatest challenge for philanthropy at the global level.
