Neues Bulletin Philanthropie Aktuell 3/2026:AI as a Tool for NPO

[Translate to English:] KI als Tool für NPO

Artificial intelligence has also arrived in the nonprofit sector. The new issue of Philanthropie Aktuell looks not only at the potential of AI, but also at how NPO can use it in meaningful ways. As its use becomes more widespread, the demands on sound judgement and human responsibility are growing as well.

In the lead article, Prof. Dr. Dominik Meier explores how AI is already being used in the day-to-day work of NPO and why its usefulness depends on the specific task at hand. What matters is not only what a model can do, but also whether an organisation can reliably assess the results it generates. He also highlights the role of trust and shows how AI can open up new possibilities as a research tool, for example in the analysis of large volumes of text. Insights from this year's international ISTR Conference also show how strongly these questions are already shaping discussions across the third sector.

In an interview with Andrea Studer, CEO of Fondation Botnar, a human rights-based perspective emerges. With regard to young people in particular, the focus is on data protection, safety, and the question of how digital technologies can be designed and used responsibly. Further contributions address the financial resilience of NPO and entrepreneurial funding models among Swiss foundations.

The issue makes clear that AI is not an end in itself, but rather a tool whose value depends on how it is used in practice.
